Shingles Shingles is also known as zoster. Zoster is caused by a virus. The same virus that causes chickenpox as a child remains dormant in the body and under times of stress or other causes, the virus re-trails its way back to the skin following a nerve. This gives a blistering eruption on the skin that is painful and can at times heal with persistent and long-term pain. Due to this, it is important to treat shingles as soon as possible. Early treatment reduces the risk of persistent pain after the skin condition has resolved.
