Skin Cancer

Everyone should have a complete skin exam at least once a year by a dermatologist. Those who have a history of skin cancer should be examined more frequently - every 3 to 6 months depending on one's individual history.

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, afflicting one out of every seven Americans each year. Ultraviolet light from the sun is one of the most common causes of skin cancer in this country. You can determine the ultraviolet index of the city you live in, so as to be prepared with sun block.

The majority of skin cancers can be cured if detected and treated in time. There are a number of different skin cancers, distinguished by cell type. The three most common forms of skin cancer are:

1.Basal Cell Carcinoma
This is a locally aggressive tumor, however, it does not commonly metastasize to distant sites.

2.Squamous Cell Carcinoma
This tumor is both locally aggressive, and has a likelihood of metastasizing. Approximately 2,000 deaths occur each year from this form of cancer.

3.Malignant Melanoma
This is one of the most serious forms of cancers, and it can metastasize. The incidence of melanoma are on the rise in the United States.

We offer a very wide range of topical, non-invasive and surgical options in treating skin cancers. Certain precancerous growths and superficial forms of Basal Cell Carcinoma can be treated effectively with topical agents. Other forms of treatment employed include curretage, excision, laser surgery, and cryosurgery.  In situations where the margin of the tumor need to be determined at the time of excision, MOHS micrographic surgery is an option.

If you have any questions, concerns, changing moles  or suspicious growths, please feel free to contact us at any time.
